Congrats! Your resume must represent you well as you got an interview. You now have the opportunity to blow your competition out of the water. Here are five job interview tips that will help you do just that. 1 – Get prepared by carefully reading the job description. Go through the qualifications and identify how your skills match their needs. Be certain that you can flesh out concrete examples of how your experience has given you the ability to perform well and how you’ll be able to do their job. It is really a good idea to know as much about the company as possible before the interview. You’ll feel more confident and will show your interviewer how serious you are about the job. 2 – Your interview is the time to really shine. Think of ways to engage your interviewer in conversation. This is an interaction between two people (or more of course) so remember that nobody likes a strictly one sided conversation. Your interviewer will ask you pointed questions about yourself as well as your experiences. You should be well prepared to answer all of the questions and have stories ready that demonstrate your success. Also, they will want you to ask questions about the job, the company and their expectations. You should have a couple of questions ready. Be sure to stay away from monetary and benefit questions. 3 – Dress the part. Know that you will only get one chance to make a first impression. Many interviewers claim that they have made up their mind about a candidate within the first 10 seconds or so, which means that how you present yourself visually is important. If you look disheveled, chances are you will have to spend the whole interview trying to overcome your appearance. Rather, let your appearance work for you. Think of it this way – there are two candidates who are both perfect for the job (you and your competitor). If the only difference between you and your competitor is that your competitor dressed the part and you dressed like you were going to do your laundry, in most cases who do you think will get the job? 4 – Practice answering questions in a mock job interview so you’re ready. The vast majority of interviewers will ask a series of fairly similar questions which you can find online. These interview questions will usually be simple yes or no, but instead will require you to provide examples of how you did or did not do something in an earlier job. Most applicants don’t do well when they are put on the spot, so it is really good advice for preparing for a job interview to practice. Talk about what you have accomplished and show how you could do the same or even better in a new role. 5 – Remember that a simple thank you goes a long way. When your interview is done, send a hand written thank you note or card to your interviewer. Let them know that you appreciate them taking the time to meet with you. Graciousness will never hurt, you stand apart from your competitors, and you show your true interest in the position.
