Lake Erie's Western Basin

Lake Erie’s Western Basin is a Meca of fishing opportunities. Good catches of Walleye, yellow perch, small mouth bass ,Large Mouth Bass and Panfish can be caught in the western basin of Lake Erie. Walleye and Small Mouth are abundant, any many a trophy of these two species is taken every year from the western basin of lake Erie. The Western Basin of Lake Erie is quite large, crossing the boarders of Ohio, Michigan, Ontario Ca. and Pennsylvania. Lake Erie IS feed through the western basin via the other great lakes flowing south through Lake St Clair, down the Detroit River Into the north west tip of the western basin.
This article will only focus on Lake Erie’s western basin waters of Ohio, and Michigan. The Western is quite large so knowing some common hot spots will save you a considerable amount of time, if you are planning a fishing trip to lake Erie. The Hot spots will be identified by state, western basin location, and species.

Ohio’s Western Basin Hotspots for Walleye are as Follows:
Winter – Breakwalls;Lakeside, Marblehead, Catwaba ice fishing reef complex, Bass Island Area.
Spring – Maumee river, Sandusky Bay, Reef Complex, Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Marblehead.
Summer – West Sister Island, Northwest of North Bass Island, East of Kelleys Island, Toledo Shipping Channel.
Fall – Kelleys Island, Bass Island, Breakwalls; Lakeside, Marblehead, Catawba
Ohio’s Western Basin Hotspots for Yellow Perch are as Follows:
Winter – Ice Fishing ; Catawba, Bass Islands, Marblehead, Sandusky Bay.
Spring – Catawba, Marblehead, Bass Islands, Kelleys Island.
Summer – Catawba, Marblehead, Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Toledo Water Intake, Metzger’s Marsh Pier
Fall – West Sister Island, Toledo Shipping Channel, Marblehead, Kelleys Island, Catawba, Bass Islands, Toledo water intake.

Winter – Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Catawba, Marblehead
Spring – Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Catawba, Marblehead, Sandusky Bay, Reef Complex
Summer – Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Catawba, Marblehead, Sandusky Bay, Reef Complex, Maumee River, Portage River, Sandusky River
Fall – Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Catawba, Marblehead.

Winter – Bass Islands, Sandusky Bay, Marblehead
