Liposuction - Post operative care

By: Richard787 Bonn787

Are side effects of liposuction life threatening?

All surgical procedures without exception have certain side effects and most of them can be easily overcome with basic post operative care. The same applies to Liposuction too. Though most of the side effects of liposuction cause discomfort and pain, they are very rarely life threatening. Let us take a brief look at these side effects so as to gain a better understanding.

One of the most common side effects of Liposuction is swelling. Treated area swells after the surgery and this swelling can last anywhere from few weeks to few months - it depends on the recovery rate which varies from person to person. Most often, the swelling puts the patient through frustration because the appearance due to swelling turns out to be just the opposite of what they wanted it to be. Moreover, it is frustrating because they are unable to judge the results of the surgery until the swelling subsides completely. Along with the swelling there can also be formation of fluid pockets and it would require few visits to the physician to have these pockets drained. There are good Scottsdale liposuction specialists who will give proper guidance on how to handle these swellings.

Another most depressing side effect is the scars created by the incisions made during the surgery. These scars fade with time and the duration again varies from person to person. You cannot think of basking in the sun until these scars fade away as exposure to direct sunlight will darken these scars. Check with your Scottsdale liposuction specialist on how to deal with these scars if it remains for more than few months.

Bruising is one of the painful side effects of liposuction and it is one of the reasons that leads the patient to depression in the post operative stage. The patients start thinking that the pain is going to be with them for life. Normally, the pain caused by bruising remains for as long as two weeks. If the pain persists, you should consult your local Scottsdale liposuction specialist who performed the surgery.

Due to the use of epinephrine in the fluid injected during the procedure, significant change in the heart rate can be observed both during and after the surgery. This will subside soon. As part of the preparation for the surgery, you should avoid using any medication that contains epinephrine. Follow the guidelines given by your Scottsdale liposuction specialist closely to avoid any post operative complications.

Other minor side effects include numbness in the treated area which will subside after few weeks, limited mobility, allergic reactions, and infection. Pain in the treated area is also not uncommon. You should avoid using any over the counter medication or self prescribed medication to treat these side effects and pain. You may put yourself to greater risk by using over the counter medication. Discuss any medical history you may have with your Scottsdale liposuction specialist prior to the surgery so that he can plan the post operative care in a better way and avoid unnecessary complications.
