Small business owners all around the world have bought, and read the book Good To Great. In fact it has sold over 2 million copies! This book took 20 people 5 years of research to complete. After many heated debates, and discussions the researchers and the author, Jim Collins, were able to discover what makes the "Great Companies" better than their comparison companies which are just "Good". Here are a few of the things that they discovered, and how you can apply them to your small business. 1) Become THE BEST (at something) - In order to become a great company, you must be better than your competition in at least one aspect. You must make your product better, cheaper, of something else that would differentiate it from your competition. If you can't do this with your current product, you must completely change your company so that you are selling a product which can be the best in its industry. 2) Utilize Your Core Values - Every company and every individual has core values. That is what they hold important. What their virtues are. You must find out what your companies core values are, and try to develop them so that your employees and you enjoy comming to work everyday, because they know that they are providing some valuable service to others. If you don't know what your companies core values are, try asking this question: "Why does my company exist, besides making money"? Or try this one: "If my company was a non-profit, what would it do"? 3) Hire the Best Employees - Make sure that each and every one of your employees is a hard working, and honest employee. Make sure that they share the same core values as your company, and that they will care deeply about the companies success. This is especially important in jobs that give more power, such as management. 4) Become a Great Leader - Make sure that you, yourself, are a great leader. Try to develop charecteristics that you would want in any leader. Some of the most important charecteristics are: a) Humility b) Will Power c) Want for companies success A great leader cares a lot about his companies success, and some of the best leaders will even care more about the companies success than their own. If you develop yourself, you will help to influence the way your employees behave, and thus will have a significant impact on the company. If you read the book Good To Great, try to look for ways that you can apply the principles taught in that book to your small business. There are many more ideas that I haven't mentioned. These are just a few ideas from the book.
