Retailers beware: one of the biggest accident inducers in retail stores is slipping and falling while stocking shelves and setting up displays. If you want to save your employees (or yourself) from a nasty fall, be sure to always use a step stool to reach higher shelves and display/storage areas. When putting up a new display or organizing store shelves be sure to follow these basic tips for safety: - Decide how you want your shelves to look. Ask yourself which items you want placed on which sections of your store shelving. For instance, sugared cereals should be stored at a child's eye level; not the parents. This way the child sees it first. Merchandising walls can be used very effectively when you consider who will be looking at them and making the merchandise easy to reach for that specific target customer. - Before setting up your new display, take all of your advertising posters and extra materials to the location where the display will be added to make it faster and easier to set up. Having all of your supplies handy saves time from having to run back and forth to the supply room, which allows you to complete the project in one try. - Next, grab a step stool to make reaching higher shelving and stacking items easier and safer. Avoid stretching to reach higher displays or standing on boxes or chairs. This can be very unsafe, especially in a retail setting. Be sure that the step stool your employees use has non-skid foot grips, side rails and is in good working order. Also, be sure that your employees know how to properly set up a step stool for their safety. For instance, step stools must be set on a flat smooth surface; no leaning against a wall or skids. Also, their legs must be locked into place to avoid slipping. If a step stool doesn't get employees to the right height, often times, having a step ladder provides the extra boost needed to reach the higher shelves. - Depending on the size of the job (and the height of the shelves), it may make sense to make setting up your display a two person job, with one person standing on the step stool and the other handing them each individual item to be placed in the display. Plus, it's also a good way to introduce team-building tasks. Setting up an attractive merchandising display can be a very creative (and fun) endeavor. But, it does come with some risk if your employees aren't careful. To avoid any unnecessary mishaps be sure that they know the safety rules before starting any new stocking or display job.
