In the late 1940's, whilst visiting Canada, a French scientist Dr Jacques Masqueller, happened to look at a book with the title "Voyages au Canada", written by French explorer Jacques Cartier. What he read amazed him and changed the direction of his life. Here, in part, is what he read in Cartier's book about the discovery of vitamin C. As the explorer recounts an incident where he and his 110 crew were stranded over much of the winter from November 1534-April 1535, with their ships which were frozen in the waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence. "Since mid - November until April 15, we were continuously trapped by 5 feet of ice and 4 feet of snow such that it was higher than the decks of our ships. The entire river was frozen above Hocheiage. Thus it was that we lost 25 per cent of our best men to the dreaded sickness. There were another forty who were at the point of death and the remainder except two or three who were gravely ill. But God, in his infinite grace, took pity on us with the knowledge and the remedy for our cure and health in the manner set forth below." (Scurvy being the dreaded sickness which is caused by the lack of vitamin C) One day, Captain Cartier taking note of the spreading sickness and the condition of his men, left the fort and walking on the ice, observed a group of people from Stadacono, a local Indian tribe. Amongst them was Agaya, who the captain had seen several days earlier suffering from the same illness that affected his crew. One of his legs had shrunk to the size of a two year olds at the knee with all loss of sensation, he had also lost most of his teeth and the remaining teeth were rotten. The captain was astounded and was determined to question him to establish how he had overcome the dreaded scurvy.. When they arrived at the fort, the captain questioned him and Agaya explained that he was cured with the liquid and residue from the leaves of a tree and that was the sole cure for the illness. The captain asked him if there were any more such trees in the vicinity of the fort and told him that one of his crew possibly had similar symptoms, not wishing to let Agaya know the extent to which the rest of his men had been affected. Agaya then agreed to send two women with Captain Cartier and they gathered nine or ten branches and they demonstrated how to strip the leaves and pull the bark from the branches and to boil them in water. Then to drink the water every other day and to put the dregs on the inflamed legs. They informed him that the tree cured all illnesses and they had named the tree Annedda. The passage from the book then went on to say: "Shortly thereafter, the captain made a beverage for the sick members of the crew of whom only one or two were courageous enough to try it. As soon as they had taken it, they asked for more which turned out to be a miracle as for every illness with which they were afflicted, they were cured and restored to health after having drunk the brew only two or three times ; such that the crew who had Syphilis for five or six years were completely cured." It was about 400 years later that Jacques Masqueller would read this journal and thus was launched on his own journey of exploration and discovery. This lead to the discovery of a whole new subclass of bioflavonoid compounds called flavanos. These flavan molecules are called OPC's ( Oligomeric Proantho Cyanidins). This wonderful true story has allowed us in modern times to enjoy the fantastic benefits of this discovery allowing us to use this knowledge to attain better health. The exciting thing about the flavanos is that they are many times more powerful in strengthening the capillaries and many more times more effective as free radical neutralisers that anything previously discovered. Dr Masqueller decided to name his new find Pycnogenol which means "to condense into one". And so it is that this special pine bark along which is rich in vitamin C and other powerful natural ingredients, gives us a most powerful anti-oxidant to help us fight free radical damage and help control the ware and tear that modern living has to offer. As a footnote, in later years the British Fleet fed their crews limes and lemons as a source of vitamin C to prevent scurvy, hence sailors became known as “Limies”. Clive Dalby
