Zinc Supplements - Why You Need It

By: Helen Stevens

Zinc is an important part of our diet and is needed by nearly every cell in our body to help preserve our health. However, our body does not naturally make zinc, so we need to get our required amounts from drinking water and consuming specific foods.

The body needs zinc for a variety of reasons including helping the immune system, sustaining our joints and tissue and provides an important role in assisting the growth of your cells. The majority of people are unlikely to have a zinc deficiency, but due to their nutritional choices, vegans can be at more risk as they avoid meat and dairy products which are naturally abundant in zinc.

Zinc supplements can be very beneficial to not only vegans, but anyone who may have a low zinc intake. Studies show that not only are our senses such as sight, smell and taste kept in excellent working order if we have a good amount of zinc in our diet, but also our hair benefits and skin wounds and conditions such as acne tend to heal quicker.

It has also been realized that zinc plays a role in our fertility and a relationship has been drawn between the low sperm count in men and low levels of zinc. The number of men that are regarded to be sub fertile is on the increase and factors such as smoking, drinking, drugs and stress are all said to play a part in this condition. In these circumstances, a high dose supplement can benefit men to a great extent. Women can also use a zinc supplement when conceiving as it influences their hormone levels.

It is important to be conscious of that like with any supplement you can overdose on zinc and if you do so on a repeated basis, you have a higher risk of really damaging your immune system. Older people are more open to having a zinc deficiency and if you are unsure of your zinc levels, it is prudent to seek advice from your local doctor or GP to make sure that a supplement will in fact be beneficial to you.
